In response to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 (9/11), the World Customs Organization (WCO) recognized the importance of logistics and international trade security. Emphasizing the security process from the origin of the shipment, the WCO established the SAFE Framework of Standards to Secure and Facilitate Global Trade (WCO SAFE FoS).
AEO is a certification granted to organizations or companies involved in the movement of goods that meet the security standards set by the WCO. Customs authorities in each country verify that these organizations comply with the WCO’s framework standards or equivalent standards regarding the security of the international trade supply chain.
The World Customs Organization has defined AEO as “AEO is a party involved in the international movement of goods in whatever function that has been approved by or on behalf of a national Customs Administrations as complying with WCO or equivalent supply chain security standards”
